What Is Kapalabhati?

Kapalabhati — from kapala (skull) and bhati (shining) — is one of the six classical purification practices of Hatha Yoga. Unlike regular breathing, Kapalabhati is an active practice: each exhale is forceful and intentional while the inhale is completely passive. The result is a rapid, rhythmic pumping of breath that clears, energises and literally makes the skull shine with vitality.

The Correct Kapalabhati Technique

Position: Sit upright, spine tall, hands on knees.

Begin: Take a natural inhale to start.

The Pump: Sharply contract your abdominal muscles, forcing air out through the nose in a strong burst. Immediately relax — the inhale happens automatically and passively.

Rhythm: Begin at one exhale per second. Build to 2 per second with practice.

Rounds: Start with 20 pumps, rest, then repeat. Build to 3 rounds of 30-50 pumps over weeks.

Caution: Stop if dizzy. Not recommended during pregnancy, menstruation or with high blood pressure.

The Profound Benefits

Kapalabhati clears mucus from respiratory tracts. Massages and tones abdominal organs. Dramatically increases oxygen levels and expels CO2. Stimulates the sympathetic nervous system for natural energy and alertness. Most significantly for mental clarity, it increases cerebral blood flow — literally bathing the brain in oxygen-rich blood.

Kapalabhati and Brain Function

Recent neuroimaging studies show Kapalabhati practice increases activation in prefrontal and parietal brain regions associated with attention, executive function and working memory. Regular practitioners report improved cognitive sharpness, faster processing speed and greater mental stamina. This is the skull shining in measurable, scientific action.

Integrating Kapalabhati into Your AVM Practice

Use Kapalabhati as the energising opening to any AVM session. Its clearing effect prepares the mind and body for deeper OM resonance work. The combination of Kapalabhati followed by deep OM chanting creates a complete breath practice — energising and clearing first, then deeply resonant and healing.
